Editors Monthly “Share”
insidewink co-founders, Jean Trebek & Alison Martin, sharing thoughts on this month’s theme of Coming of Age in the world in which we find ourselves.
Happy Birthday, Jean!
Jean: Happy Birthday to you, Alison.
Alison: Yay! Self distanced, quarantine Birthdays!
Jean: Yes! It’s our birthday month and not only are we Virgos, but we are perpetually Coming Of Age.
Alison: That is so true! What does Coming of Age mean to you?
Jean: I think it means coming to an inner realization of yourself that is more mature and responsible. It’s about accepting your innate worth as a human being and making your own decisions for your own life… How about you, Alison?
Alison: To me it means I can eat cake and go to bed when I want! 🙂
I do think that our country is going through a collective Coming of Age period…
Jean: … which is not always easy…
Alison: … but very necessary. It’s time to step up and to make a conscious choice to help the world reconcile injustices and begin the healing. That’s on a global level… it’s also time to individually take care of ourselves – mentally and physically. To reach out when we need help, to start conversations, to check in.
Jean: I found this quote that I loved and wanted to share with our readers. It’s by Clarissa Pinkola Estes in her essay You Were Made For This.
“In any dark time, there is a tendency to veer toward fainting over how much is wrong or unmended in the world. Do not focus on that.
There is a tendency, too, to fall into being weakened by dwelling on what is outside your reach, by what cannot yet be. Do not focus there…
We are needed, that is all we can know… Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good.”

Jean and Alison,
Thank you for your “conversation”, especially making mention of maturity and a collective “Coming of Age” for our nation and our world. What a positive way of re-narrating the present circumstances we find ourselves in! It makes me think of the notion of “Beginner’s Mind” as that attitude which allows us to know that we are always IN PROCESS and that intentionality is an exquisite and imperative part of the journey!
Hi Daniel,
Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment… it’s truly appreciated.
Take good care!
Jean
