“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.”

— Mary Lou Cook

To be perfectly honest, I never considered the meaning of the word “creativity” as taking risks or breaking rules and certainly not making mistakes… however, now that I really think about it, those words describe the process of being creative in the most sincere way.

Like a lot of people, when I think of someone who is creative, what immediately comes to mind are writers, artists, musicians, chefs… you know, that domain of certain people born with an innate gift to receive wonderful ideas and execute them with their own unique and fabulous style. This definition, however, actually feels remote and quite arduous, and it’s probably the reason why so many people say that they don’t feel creative… and that too is the very reason why I don’t consider myself to be very creative as well.

So let’s put an end to that definition…lay it to rest right here and now, and embrace M. Cook’s definition as mentioned above.  It’s far more inclusive, accurate and honoring of our human experience.

Here are three tips to help ignite your creativity:

1. Forgiveness

It’s hard to be in the now, where all your power lies, if you’re still harboring past experiences and conversations. Make a conscious decision to let it go, be done with it once and for all. It’s the most beautiful and liberating gift you can give yourself. Forgiveness will free your mind up so that it can tap into something far more expansive and innovative.

2. Silence

Becoming still and resting your mind just for 5 minutes a day will work wonders for your creative expression. Set your intention to expand your creativity/imagination while you meditate and see what happens after one week. Carry a notebook with you so you’ll be sure to jot down those great ideas when they pop into your head.

3.  Movement

Move your body.  Go for a walk, dance, swim, etc. Movement gets your circulation going and has a direct effect on the right hemisphere of the brain which performs tasks that have do with creativity and the arts.

I hope that by suggesting a new way of defining the word “creativity”, you’ll see that you have been, and always will be, a creative being…. the Universe is watching to see what’s coming next from wonderful you…and whatever it is, it’s perfect.
